What is a yellow dragon fruit

Yellow dragon fruit, also known as yellow pitahaya, pitaya, cactus fruit, or strawberry pear. They grow on a climbing cactus called Hylocereus in places like Columbia, South America, Equador, Costa Rica and more.

Its bright yellow skin is inedible and it has a white flesh with tiny black seeds that can be eaten.

This fruit has become more available in the United States and can be found at many grocery stores throughout the country. You can even purchase them online if you are not able to find them locally.

What does a dragon fruit taste like

The taste of a yellow dragon fruit is sweet but mild, similar to a sweet cross between a kiwi and a pear. The yellow variety is sweeter than the red dragon fruit making it perfect for things like fruit salad and smoothies.

When choosing a ripe dragon fruit to eat, look for fruit that has bright yellow skin and is firm to the touch with a slight give. You don't want it to feel soft and mushy. Try to avoid fruit that has lots of brown spots or skin.

How to cut a yellow dragon fruit

Step one: Cut the dragon fruit in half lengthwise with a sharp knife. You can leave it cut in half or cut in half again.

Step two: Use a spoon or knife to scoop out the fruit. Slice into pieces.

    How to store

Whole dragon fruit can stay on the counter at room temperature for 1-2 days. Once it is ripe, it can be stored in the refrigerator for another 2-3 days.

Once the fruit has been cut, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

Difference between yellow and red dragon fruit

There are actually three different types of dragon fruit.

Yellow dragon fruit - Hylocereus megalanthus has yellow skin, slightly larger seeds and is sweeter than its counterparts.

Red dragon fruit - Hylocereus undatus is the most common variety. Reddish pink skin with white flesh and small seeds.

Red/pink dragon fruit - Hylocereus costaricensis is a little harder to find the fresh fruit in grocery stores but can often be found in the freezer section. This variety has a reddish pink skin and pink flesh.
