Ever wondered what exactly white American cheese is? Wonder no more! This post will explain everything you want to know about white American cheese from how it is made how to serve it, as well as how to store it.

    White American Cheese

White American cheese is a type of cheese that is white in color and has a dry texture, with a mild flavor, and is crumbly. It is commonly used in grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, and added as a cheese option to cheeseburgers.

White American cheese is not as sharp or flavorful as other types of cheese, but it melts well and has a creamy texture.

White American Cheese vs. Yellow American Cheese

There are two main types of American cheese: white and yellow. White American cheese is made from pasteurized milk, while yellow American cheese is made almost the same way but is a combination of different cheeses.

Both types of cheese have a similar flavor, but white American cheese is slightly milder. Yellow American cheese also has a higher fat content, which some people prefer. Ultimately, the choice between white and yellow American cheese is a matter of personal preference.

    White American Cheese Substitute Ideas

When it comes to white American cheese, there are a few cheese substitutes that can be used in its place. One option is white cheddar cheese. This cheese has a similar flavor to white American cheese, but it is a bit sharper. It's an excellent choice for a substitute.

Another option is Monterey Jack cheese. This cheese is also similar in flavor to white American cheese, but it has a creamier texture.

Finally, mozzarella cheese can be used as a substitute for white American cheese. Mozzarella has a milder flavor than white American cheese, but it can still be used in many recipes.

How long does American white cheese last?

Typically, American cheese will last for about two weeks after the package is opened. However, if you store it properly, it can last for up to six weeks. It is good to follow the expiration date printed on the packaging which you will find is typically five to six months after the cheese was produced.

You may even be able to eat it up to a few weeks after this date depending on how well you store your cheese. I frankly find that cheese doesn’t last that long in my refrigerator as we love cheese and find all different types of ways to use white american cheese in different recipes.

How to store White American Cheese

To extend the shelf life of American cheese, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or Aluminum foil and store it in the refrigerator.

You can also freeze American cheese, although the texture may change slightly after thawing. A tip to keeping American cheese the freshest refrain from opening it until you are in need of using it.

Note that bacterial growth is the main reason cheese goes bad. You will know this has happened when your cheese starts looking dried out. So even though you may think your cheese has gone bad due to the amount of time it has stayed in your refrigerator just note that most cheeses like American cheese have a long shelf life when stored properly.

When stored properly, American cheese can be a delicious and versatile addition to almost any recipe.

American cheese is also an ingredient in many recipes, such as omelets, quesadillas, and sliders. While it is not as flavorful as some other cheeses, it melts easily and provides a creamy texture to dishes. Whether you are in the mood for a classic grilled cheese sandwich, cheeseburger, or something more adventurous, you can find a recipe to suit your needs. American White Cheese FAQ

Is white American cheese real cheese?

It is not considered a "real" cheese because it is pasteurized. Kraft singles white cheese is made with less than 51% real cheese.

    Is white American cheese pasteurized?

Yes, it is a pasteurized cheese.

Can you freeze white American cheese?

You can technically freeze American cheese but I find once it's thawed the texture changes a little.

If you are looking for more of a snack option you can cube it or even add it to your favorite salads or soups. Have you tried white American cheese before? If so, what’s your favorite way to enjoy it?
